Useful IT Tools

My background is in Information Technology, and throughout my career I’ve stumbled across numerous useful tools.  Here are some of those tools, and how to obtain them.  You’ll notice I gravitate towards free, but I’m not afraid to spend a little bit of money if I believe in a product.  Click on the title of the software to be taken to the product webpage.

This program shows how your disk space is being used.  I’ve used this several times in IT, when a server is running out of space.  I’d open the program and scan the hard drive, it would show me which directories are taking up the most space.  This was very helpful, because 99% of the time those directories were employee’s network drives.  I could even drill down to the file level and talk to the employee about what was taking up so much space.  This tool was very helpful in the time when disk space was a precious commodity, now I don’t use it as much, but it still comes in handy.  There are other versions available, TreeSize Personal from $24.95 and TreeSizeProfessional from $54.95.  I was able to do everything I needed with the free version.

This is a very lightweight remote control software that allows you to connect to PCs within your network environment.  This isn’t free; however, I highly recommend it for IT support staff.  Basically the server program, which is the part that is installed on the PC you wish to control, runs in the notification area of the task bar, and can permissions can be setup based on a username and password.  The viewer program, which is the program used to view the remote PC, allows for multiple connections and you can control, view, file transfer, chat, reboot, and more the remote PC.

Pretty much everyone knows about TeamViewer, but I’m listing it anyways, as it is very simple to use, and isn’t just for scammers.  That’s right, a ton of scammers use TeamViewer to take control of people’s PCs.  But when used for legitimate purposes, it can be very handy.  It’s completely free for personal use, and can range in price for business purposes.  TeamViewer allows users to remotely control PCs and other devices such as Android TV, and smartphones.  I use the business version at work, and have had much success with it.  The business version allows you to create custom graphics that will link to the custom software with your business logo and terms and conditions that you create.

This free utility does exactly what the name implies.  You can rename files, including the extension.  You can even change file attributes and timestamps, plus it allows for RegEx.  I use the GUI version, but there is also a command line version available.  There isn’t much to say about this program, I don’t use it all the time, but it does come in handy when I need to use it.

I love this program!  Mostly because I often have the need to manipulate text files, and this is the easiest way to do it.  I use the Macro feature a lot to run the same functions on multiple lines.  Plus if you want to remove all of the lines that contain certain text, it’s easy to “bookmark” the line, then remove all bookmarked lines.  Notepad++ recognizes many coding languages and will format syntax accordingly.  Plus the ability to have add-ons from the open source community makes the uses endless.

My New Experience with Cryptocurrency

A couple of months ago I wanted to be adventurous, so I delved into the world of Cryptocurrency.  After watching numerous YouTube videos, I thought I had enough knowledge to begin.  My first venture was creating a Bitcoin wallet on my PC using Electrum software, it was pretty simple to create the wallet.  Next I needed to buy some Bitcoin (BTC).

After searching several sites, I found one that would allow me to purchase BTC with my $25 PayPal balance, and not go through the rigorous identification process.  I used LocalBitCoins.com to find a seller that was willing to accept PayPal, and not require identification (since this was new for me, I didn't want to give out copies of my ID or personal information).  To make a long story short, I bought $25, paid a high fee, bought another $25, paid another high fee, and ended up transferring some to Electrum wallet, just to try it out.

Someone I know had a link to Coinbase on their Twitter account, which is a very mainstream way to easily purchase Cryptocurrency using a credit / debit card, or bank account.  Plus I got $10 in free BTC, and so did she.  Coinbase allows users to purchase Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

I ended up purchasing all four types that Coinbase offered, and I was doing really well, in fact I was up by ~$1,300.  Then December 21st and 22nd happened, and the price of Bitcoin dropped.  It was higher when I bought, which was ~$18k, but as of now, it is ~$14k.  The good news is that I diversified and my other Cryptocurrencies didn't take as much of a hit, plus Bitcoin started to rise back up within the next couple days.  I'm someone that is very cheap and doesn't like to spend money on risky things, so I withdraw all my spent money, and let my earnings ride.  I ended up not losing any money, and I'm still ahead...not $1,300.

The moral to my story is don't invest in Cryptocurrency unless you know exactly how it works, and you aren't afraid to lose money.  Don't get me wrong, I recommend investing, just make sure you are comfortable with any outcome.

If you'd like to open a Coinbase account, please use my referral link below, you and I both get $10 in BTC once you invest at least $100.

Free Logo Maker

I know it's been a couple of years since I last post, to be honest, I forgot about having a blog, but I thought I'd give it another go.  I noticed my blog could use some cosmetic updates, so I looked into the BlogSpot settings, and made some nice changes.  I needed a logo for my blog, so I came across Free Logo Maker from a Google search.

https://logomakr.com

I created my Brad's Blog logo, after just a few minutes of using Free Logo Maker.  I downloaded the free version, but promised to give credit to the company.  If you are in need of creating a simple logo, check them out!

Here are some of my creations, before selecting the one I ultimately went with....
